Calculate rolling offset, true offset, and travel length for pipe or conduit routing.

Formula

True Offset = √(H² + V²); Travel = √(Offset² + Advance²); Setback = Offset / tan(θ)
  • H = horizontal offset; V = vertical offset; both in same units (inches or feet).
  • Travel is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the true offset and advance.
  • Setback = distance from bend centre to end of straight pipe for each fitting.

H=6 in, V=8 in, advance=12 in, 45° fittings

Inputs
  • Horizontal Offset: 6 in
  • Vertical Offset: 8 in
  • Advance (run): 12 in
  • Fitting Angle: 45

True Offset = √(36+64) = √100 = 10 in. Travel = √(100+144) = √244 = 15.620 in. Setback = 10/tan(45°) = 10 in.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rolling offset?
A rolling offset routes a pipe around an obstruction by combining a horizontal and a vertical offset simultaneously. The 'true offset' is the diagonal distance to overcome both offsets at once.
