AUDIT Alcohol Use Disorders Test Calculator

Score the full 10-item AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) developed by the WHO to screen for hazardous and harmful drinking. Answer all ten questions and the calculator totals your score (0–40) and indicates the risk zone, from low-risk drinking through to likely alcohol dependence.

Rates and fees change frequently. Always confirm the current figures with the official authority before relying on this result.

Formula

AUDIT score = sum of 10 items (Q1–Q8 score 0–4; Q9–Q10 score 0, 2 or 4). Total 0–40.
  • Questions 1–8 are scored 0 to 4; questions 9 and 10 are scored 0, 2 or 4. The ten answers are added for a total from 0 to 40.
  • A total of 8 or more suggests hazardous or harmful drinking; 16+ indicates harmful use; 20+ warrants assessment for alcohol dependence.
  • The WHO groups scores into risk zones (I–IV) that map to suggested actions, from education through to specialist referral.
  • AUDIT is a validated screening tool, not a diagnosis. A high score means a clinician should evaluate further.

Example: light social drinker

Frequently asked questions

What is the AUDIT test?
The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test is a 10-question screen developed by the World Health Organization to detect hazardous and harmful alcohol use and possible dependence.
How is the AUDIT scored?
Questions 1–8 score 0–4 each and questions 9–10 score 0, 2 or 4. Adding all ten gives a total between 0 and 40.
What does my score mean?
Roughly: 0–7 low-risk, 8–15 hazardous (brief advice), 16–19 harmful (counselling), and 20+ possible dependence needing fuller assessment.
How is AUDIT different from AUDIT-C?
AUDIT-C uses only the first three consumption questions for a quick screen, while the full AUDIT adds seven questions on dependence symptoms and alcohol-related harm.
Is the AUDIT a diagnosis?
No. It is a screening questionnaire. A high score indicates risk and the need for a professional evaluation, not a confirmed diagnosis.
