Formula
Birth Year = Reference Year − Age (minus 1 more if birthday has not occurred yet)
- If this year's birthday has already happened, the birth year is simply the reference year minus the age.
- If the birthday has not yet happened this year, subtract one more year, because the person was actually born a year earlier than a plain subtraction suggests.
- The reference year defaults to the current year but can be set to any year you are calculating from.
- Age and year are treated as whole numbers.
- This gives a single calendar year, not an exact date — use a date-of-birth tool if you need the precise day.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a birth year from an age?
Subtract the age from the current (or reference) year. If the person has not yet had their birthday this year, subtract one more year.
Why does the birthday matter?
Until the birthday happens, the person is still a year younger than the simple year difference implies, so their birth year is one earlier.
What is the reference year?
It is the year you are counting back from — usually the current year, but you can set it to any year to find the birth year as of that point.
Does this give an exact date?
No. It returns the birth year only. To get a precise date you need the actual date of birth or date of death plus age.
