  • Deurenberg formula is an estimate with ±3–5% accuracy for body fat.
  • Does not account for muscle mass — BMI is less meaningful for athletes.
  • South Asian populations may have different risk thresholds — consult a doctor.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)² Body Fat % (Deurenberg) = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × age) − 16.2 IBW (Hamwi, men) = 48.0 + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 ft
  • BMI is weight in kg divided by height in metres squared, using the same standard adult categories.
  • Estimated body fat uses the Deurenberg equation: (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × age) − 16.2 for men.
  • Ideal body weight uses the Hamwi formula for men: 48 kg for the first 5 ft of height plus 2.7 kg per inch above that.
  • The healthy weight range is the weight that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height.
  • BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular men may read as overweight despite low body fat.

30-year-old man, 80 kg, 175 cm

Inputs
  • Age: 30 years
  • Weight: 80 kg
  • Height: 175 cm

BMI = 80 ÷ 1.75² ≈ 26.1 (overweight). Estimated body fat is about 21%, with a healthy weight range of roughly 56.7–76.3 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI different for men and women?
The BMI formula and adult categories are identical. Men typically carry more muscle, so this tool adds a male-tuned body-fat estimate for extra context.
How is body fat estimated?
It uses the Deurenberg equation, which predicts body fat percentage from BMI and age. It is an estimate, accurate to within a few percent for most men.
What is ideal body weight?
The Hamwi formula gives a reference weight based on height. It is a rough target, not a strict rule, and the healthy BMI range is usually more useful.
Why might a fit man read as overweight?
BMI counts muscle the same as fat. Athletic or heavily muscled men can have a high BMI with low body fat, so consider body fat alongside it.
How accurate are these numbers?
BMI is exact from your inputs; body fat and ideal weight are population estimates. Treat them as guides and consult a professional for a full assessment.
