Active energy expenditure (AEE) is the calories you burn through movement and activity, on top of the calories your body uses at rest. Enter your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and choose your activity level, and the calculator returns your active calories, your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), and your resting burn. It is the activity slice of your daily calorie needs.

Formula

Active energy = TDEE − BMR = BMR × (activity factor − 1)
  • Total daily energy (TDEE) = BMR × activity factor.
  • Active energy (AEE) = TDEE − BMR = BMR × (activity factor − 1).
  • Activity factors range from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active) and are population averages.
  • AEE captures movement, exercise and the thermic effect of activity, but not your resting burn.
