Calories from Alcohol 91 kcal
Pure Alcohol 13 g
The Alcohol Calories Calculator estimates how many calories come from the pure alcohol in a drink. Alcohol provides about 7 kcal per gram: grams = volume × ABV% × 0.789, then calories = grams × 7.
- Counts alcohol calories only, not sugars or other ingredients.
Formula
Alcohol (g) = volume × ABV% × 0.789; kcal = grams × 7
- First find the grams of pure alcohol: volume (mL) × ABV as a decimal × 0.789 (the density of ethanol).
- Then multiply grams of alcohol by 7 kcal/g to get the calories from alcohol.
- This counts only the alcohol calories; sugars, carbs and other ingredients (e.g. in cocktails or sweet wines) add more.
- Use it to compare drinks — stronger and larger drinks contribute more calories.
Example Calculation
Inputs
- Drink Volume: 330 ml
- Alcohol (ABV): 5 %
A 330 mL beer at 5% ABV contains 330 × 0.05 × 0.789 ≈ 13 g of alcohol, giving about 13 × 7 ≈ 91 kcal from alcohol alone.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories are in alcohol?
Pure alcohol provides about 7 kcal per gram — nearly as much as fat — which is why alcoholic drinks can be calorie-dense.
Does this include sugar or mixers?
No. It counts only the calories from alcohol; sweet wines, beers and cocktail mixers add extra calories on top.
Why multiply by 0.789?
That is the density of ethanol (g/mL), used to convert the volume of pure alcohol into grams.
How do I find a drink's alcohol volume?
Multiply the drink's total volume by its ABV percentage — for example, 330 mL at 5% is 16.5 mL of pure alcohol.
Do alcohol calories cause weight gain?
They can. Alcohol calories add to your daily total and the body tends to burn alcohol first, slowing fat metabolism.
