Health Updated 14 Jun 2026

This absolute neutrophil count (ANC) calculator works out the number of infection-fighting neutrophils in your blood from a complete blood count. Enter your total white cell count and the percentages of neutrophils and band cells, and it returns the ANC in cells/µL along with whether the result indicates neutropenia.

Rates and fees change frequently. Always confirm the current figures with the official authority before relying on this result.
  • WBC must be entered in ×10⁹/L.

Formula

ANC = WBC × (Neutrophil% + Band%) ÷ 100
  • The ANC is the total white-cell count multiplied by the combined fraction of mature neutrophils (segs) and immature band neutrophils: ANC = WBC × (neutrophil% + band%) / 100.
  • With WBC entered in ×10⁹/L, multiply the result by 1000 to express the ANC in cells/µL.
  • A normal ANC is roughly 1500 cells/µL or above.
  • Neutropenia is graded by ANC: mild 1000-1500, moderate 500-1000, and severe below 500 cells/µL.
  • A low ANC raises infection risk; severe neutropenia is a medical concern requiring prompt attention.

Example Calculation

Inputs
  • Total WBC: 6 ×10⁹/L
  • Neutrophils: 60 %
  • Bands: 0 %

With a WBC of 6 ×10⁹/L and 60% neutrophils (0% bands), ANC = 6 × 60 / 100 = 3.6 ×10⁹/L, or 3,600 cells/µL, which is in the normal range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the absolute neutrophil count?
It is the actual number of neutrophils in the blood, calculated from the total white-cell count and the percentage of neutrophils and bands.
How is ANC calculated?
ANC = WBC × (neutrophil% + band%) / 100. If WBC is in ×10⁹/L, multiply by 1000 to get cells per microlitre.
What ANC counts as neutropenia?
Below about 1500 cells/µL: mild is 1000-1500, moderate 500-1000, and severe below 500 cells/µL.
Why include band cells?
Bands are immature neutrophils that still help fight infection, so they are added to mature neutrophils in the ANC calculation.
Why does a low ANC matter?
A low ANC means fewer neutrophils to fight bacteria, raising infection risk. Severe neutropenia needs prompt medical attention.
