Livestock Fence Calculator

ft
ft
ft
Distance between fence posts. Typical: 8–12 ft.
Barbed wire strands. Cattle: 4–5; horses: 5–6.

Calculate the amount of fencing materials (posts, wire, staples) needed to fence a pasture for livestock.

Formula

Perimeter = 2(L+W); Posts = Perimeter ÷ Spacing; Wire rolls = (Perimeter × Strands) ÷ 100
  • Add corner and brace posts at each corner (typically 3 posts per corner).
  • Add 10% extra wire for corners, gates, and splices.
  • Staple count assumes 2 staples per post per wire strand.

300×300 ft pasture, 8 ft spacing, 4 strands

Inputs
  • Pasture Length: 300 ft
  • Pasture Width: 300 ft
  • Post Spacing: 8 ft
  • Wire Strands: 4

Perimeter = 1200 ft. Posts = 1200/8+1 = 151. Wire = 1200×4/100 = 48 rolls. Staples = 151×4×2 = 1208.
